Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they also make loving companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or near children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once the bird's sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
